Robert Shaw Email

And another clear thinking email, from Bob Shaw of the ITU.   Hi Keith, Sorry to hear RealNames is shutting down. I don’t think a lot of people in the US understand the importance of offering a non-Latin name resolution service and how important it is to the Asia-Pac countries and elsewhere. I guess the only way to demonstrate it is to give an English language speaker a Chinese, Japanese, Hanguel or Arabic version of Windows and ask them to type in a name in those languages in the address bar. Then they get it…. Enjoyed your web blog. Got

Dan Brinklin

From Dan Brinklin at www.satn.org [Dan was inventor of the spreadsheet with Bob Frankston] DanB at 2:48 PM [url]: The Address Bar bottleneck As Bob Frankston has pointed out on this web site and in other essays, we have real problems with having only the current one-level DNS as a mechanism for turning URLs into IP addresses. We need to experiment with other ways of getting to web sites. The Internet isn’t just for “famous names” like Coca Cola, unless they want to pay for the whole thing and pay us to use it (which we won’t if it’s only for

Threats

I received this today [see the email below] Sure seems like somebody at Microsoft is unhappy with the facts coming out. To be clear – so that there is nothing misleading on this site here are my responses: 1. Microsoft has every right not to renew any agreement. There is no representation on this site otherwise. What is at issue is not its right to discontinue service from RealNames, or the messages since March 2002 that this was likely, but the fact that it did not renew and the consequences of that decision. The final negotiation was on 7 May 2002.

Asia Issues

From Computergram RealNames Shutdown Outcry Grows in Asia Section: 01. Top Stories By Kevin Murphy The closure of RealNames Corp a week ago has started to cause a backlash among members of the Asian internet community, who are forecasting a major disruption in how speakers of Asian languages access the internet. RealNames shut its doors last week, after Microsoft declined to renew an agreement that saw RealNames offer keyword-based web addressing via Internet Explorer’s address bar. The lack of IE integration left RealNames with a less than attractive business model, and in Microsoft’s debt to the tune of $25m. Senior

Update for the weekend

For those with time to spare this weekend here are some interesting reads: 1. A Summary of the progress RealNames was making as a business. 2.
